In 1755, Prince Richelieu met with Governor Guienne, who recommended him as the best, the most sustainable wine of Chateau Lafite. When the Marshal returned to Paris, King Louis XV would tell him: "Indeed, Marshal, you look 25 years younger than before leaving for Guienne!" "I must say to Your Majesty," replied the 60-year-old old Speaker, "that I discovered the Secret of Eternal Youth: a wine from Chateau Lafite, a truly cordial, wonderful, divine nectar!" Richelieu gave the king several bottles. Soon, in Versailles, wine was begun, which the king liked so much. Everyone wanted to try this great drink. Madame Pompadour served them at her unusual parties. Later, M-du Barry did not serve anything other than the royal wine, as they were called then. It was a great deal for the then owner of the vineyard, Nicolas Alexander de Ségur, known as the Prince of Wine.
Today, the estate is run by Eric de Rothschild, one of the French branches of this family (Mouton belongs to the English part of the family). The vineyard cultivates the classic varieties of Médoc: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot. Each year, Château leaves about 300,000 bottles. The Château Lafite Rothschild also owns other well-known vineyards: Château Duhart-Milon (Pauillac), Château Rieussec (Sauternes), Château l'Evangile (Pomerol) and lesser-known Château Paradis Casseuil and Château Peyre-Lebade.
Chateau Lafite has a very intense crimson color, with purple reflections. On the nose, the fruits are expressed in light dominating wood. There are notes of fresh strawberries and tobacco that have been perfectly integrated. The intensity of the palate increases extremely evenly. Despite the tight, dense texture and finish, the whole is expressed in perfect harmony with light tannins. The full potential of this wine can be known after several years of aging.
